Looking for a College Laptop?

Hey guys,
I’m headed to college in the fall and I am currently in the search for a college laptop. I’ve done a lot of research and I love all of the features on the Alienware M17 laptop, but have heard nothing but bad reviews on it. I like it because of its style, security fingerprint scanner, cool customizable lights all over it, and space, although the size and weight are a downfall. I would not use it for games, rather just for a ton of music, documents and photos etc… Are there any other laptops for 00- that have a ton of space for music and photos, and look stylish as well as having the cool features as the alienware m17? What’s your opinion on the Dell XPS laptop? Are they reliable? ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED! THANKS IN ADVANCED!
I was looking into alienware because of (again) the features it had were really cool, and because of the very different design it had. Also because I was told that even if you don’t use a gaming laptop for games it will still be very fast and you can use the space that was for games, for music video documents etc. And as far as the weight goes, were not talking 45lbs, it’s like 9.5 lbs which I agree is a lot for a laptop but a lot I’ve looked at were all around 7 or 8…

Should I buy the Dell XPS 1330 ?

Hi I’m thinking of buying the Dell XPS 1330, it’s got:

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T8100 (2.10 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 3 MB
L2 cache)

Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium SP1- English

1 Year Base Warranty

Tuxedo Black & 2.0 mega pixel Camera for CCFL Display

LCD 13.3" UltraSharp™ WXGA (1280×800) CCFL Display (220nits) with TrueLife™

Biometric Fingerprint Reader

MEMORY 3072MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [1x2048 1x1024]

250GB (5400RPM) SATA Hard Drive

128MB nVidia® GeForce® 8400M GS

OPTICAL DRIVEFixed 8x DVD /-RW Slim Slot Load Drive, including SW

Primary 9-cell Lithium-Ion Battery (85 WHr)

It costs £820

Is this a good laptop for playing game such as Age of Empires III, Rome Total War, Medieval II Total War etc..(Other games too, maybe higher specs in the near future.) I will also need it for school, but it will stay in my room (Coursework etc.) Other things too such as MSN, web browsing. Should I get Norton antivirus 360 All-In-one security version 2.0 or should i get something else such as Kaspersky?

I also saw the Asus G1 costs £715, it’s got:

#Microsoft® VISTA HOME PREMIUM
# Video Camera 1.3 Million Pixels
# Battery Pack & Life 8 cells
# Hard Drive 2.5" 9.5 mm SATA 320 GB 5400 RPM.

Any other laptops, which would do a better job, I cant really spend over £900. The more info the better!

Thx very much :)

Oh yeah actualy the xps costs £820 with Microsoft office 2007 home and student. so deduct £70 (£750)

i want to replace vista with XP on my xps 1530 laptop, can i do this and still use the biometric scanner?

I just bought my dell XPS 1530 laptop. I want to switch from vista basic to XP because I’ve always had problems with vista. Does anyone know of a program that will allow me to switch to XP and still use the biometric fingerprint reader that came with the computer? Or would it be wiser to switch to Vista Ultimate?

Problems with Windows 7 and my fingerprint scanner?

I recently did a clean install of windows 7 64-bit over my vista 32-bit. When i booted up, i realized that my fingerprint scanner no longer worked. Ok. I find the biometric device under device manager and click find drivers, and it installs one. However, it was not the really nice scanning suite that came on my computer (dell xps m1530). So i google it and find that I had the UPEK protection suite, and find a long to install it. So i do that. Now, my scanner won’t work. The UPEK folder i downloaded contains some drivers that are apparently doing nothing, and when i try to enroll/access enrollment for fingers under the old suite, i get the following error: "cannot load enrolled fingers for biometric device1. The unit ID number doesn’t correspond to a valid biometric device."

a) what can i do to fix it? and
b) how can i get my nice fingerprint suite back?
correction: The suite i am getting errors from is in fact a UPEK related suite, though not the one i recognize. So a) how to i direct my biometric device to that software and b) where can i find the actual software that i used to have my on my laptop?
