Why would a boss run an office like a grade school class?

I’m a state employee who works for a boss who doesn’t seem to know better. What I mean by this is that she has a time clock for us to punch in/out: mind you NO STATE WORKERS ARE DOING THIS because we are on monthly salary (with the exception of a few who are blue collar workers). The old time clock broke & she promptly replaced it; then the new clock went awry but she fixed it! I was told someone abused their time many, many years ago; a time before any of us joined her (except her asst). Is this her way of not addressing someone who might currently have an attendance/time issue?? Im feeling ill about it because we are the only ones clocking in/out. I have always been accountable for my attendance, so Im very OFFENDED…and yes I’m looking for other employment (not just for this reason- because there are other issues, as well).

Rate this joke……….?

For thirty years, Johnson had arrived at work at 9A.M. on the dot. He had never missed a day and was never late.

Consequently, when on one particular day 9 A.M. passed without Johnson’s arrival, it caused a sensation. All work ceased, and the boss himself, looking at his watch and muttering, came out into the corridor.

Finally, precisely at ten, Johnson showed up, clothes dusty and torn, his face scratched and bruised, his glasses bent. He limped painfully to the time clock, punched in, and said, aware that all eyes were upon him, "I tripped and rolled down two flights of stairs in the subway. Nearly killed myself."

And the boss said, "And to roll down two flights of stairs took you a whole hour?"

Can my employer deny me cell phone usage even though I'm not on their time?

I work at a chain grocery store and recently my boss started enforcing a new cell phone usage policy. The new policy states that employees are not to use or even to possess a cellular device while working on the floor. We may only use them during our two 15 minute breaks and our 1 hour lunch. This is completely understandable…. but the policy also states that we are not allowed to have our phone if we have our store attire on whether we are on company time or not. Can they really do this? I had a fellow employee actually get in trouble due to being seen talking on his phone while off the clock but he still had his shirt on. Can they really do this?

Why is my boss bothering me about my time?

I am an analyst for a large company, and I have been working in my current Division for 1 1/2 years. My boss has told me more than once that he doesn’t care when I come in, when I take lunch, when I leave, etc. He only expects that I do good work and get my work done on time. I have kept my side of the bargain. I produce excellent work, get it done on time, and conduct myself very professionally. I’m very good to him as an employee and show him respect. Since I’ve started 1 1/2 years ago, I often walk in around 9:30, I take over an hour lunch, and sometimes I leave early. This has been my way for the last 9 years of employment, and because I am so reliable and do excellent work, all my bosses have always left me alone.

Well, all of a sudden today, my boss calls me into his office and shuts the door. He asked me what time I came in, how long did I take lunch, and what time I plan on leaving. I was thinking to myself, "Uh oh. Did I forget to turn something in? Was someone looking for me?" But no…Everything was as usual. But, for some reason he was reaming me because of my time. He said that from now on he wants me to keep to my scheduled times.

Anyway, I’m confused. What the hell happened? I know that most people probably can’t relate to me, especially those in retail, production environments, etc., but I’d really like to hear from professionals who are given autonomy. Has it ever been taken away? Why? What should I do? Should I confront him about it or just leave it alone? I think I’ll wait and see if he brings it up again and then discuss it with him. I don’t want to work in an environment where my boss is always looking at the clock and keeping track of my schedule.

Employees milking the clock?

I work the front desk of an Insulation Installation Company so we have manual laborers to do the installations. My boss is the branch manager and he just promoted our last crew chief to sales guy, he tried to get me to be the new crew chief but a month later found out the guys didnt like to take orders from a woman. we’ve known for a long time now that the laborers will take extra long on a job if they think its too small and wont get their 8 hrs that day. they end up losing track of time and getting over time. i think they do it all on purpose just to get over time.

3 of them finally got caught today and they get 3 hrs deducted from their time today.

we just got extremely busy and i told my boss that if we dont have a talk with our laborers we’re going to have a horrible month with builders mad at us cuz we have to change the schedule because another job took a day longer than supposed to. apartently he didnt have a talk with them. so today they got caught.

they’re all mexican cept for 2 and they dont speak very good english or atleast they act like they dont.

does anyone know how i should convince them that they need to get things done on time or this next month is going to suck. reminder that they prolly wont listen to any thing i say because im a woman and they told my boss they didnt like me as the crewchief. and last time i got on to them about being late in the mornings our top installer quit, but my boss got him to work again.
but thats the thing i cant justify anything because i work in an office i sit at a desk all day, we need someone out on the jobsites with the guys managing their time for them and that type stuff. i would love to do that job. but the guys dont listen to me. and again its hard sometimes to get my point across cuz they only understand basic english and i have to find words they understand

Boss at work influencing staff for votes for Governor.?

Boss has notice at time clock, that he will take employees to the voting polls to vote, and each person is eligible to put their name in the pot to win 100.00. There is also a vote M- – - T – - – - – sign on the bottom of the page. Isn’t this illegal?
Boss is not saying if we vote for M. T. we get to put our name in the pot, is just seems extreme for a private run long term care facility administrator to be doing this, and influencing employees like this.

Boss being a jerk about my clocking in/out?

I work at a hotel, and we have a time pilot system at work that you have to punch in/out with to clock with. Recently, my boss has told me that I need to take a half hour break every five hrs. (by law because I’m 17.) that I need to clock out for. Last week, I forgot to clock in, and he sent me an email saying things like

quote: "You need to figure this out, because I’m not going to fix anymore of YOUR mistakes. If you forget to clock in, you’ll be losing hours. Now get it RIGHT."

Today I forgot to clock back in after my break.. again.. and that means if I tell my boss he’ll get pissed and not pay me for it.
My boss knows that I’m under a lot of pressure, as I’m 17, going to school, working full time at the hotel, as well as fixing computers and selling art in a gallery. He’d just tell me that it’s my problem and that I’m at fault. Isn’t there a law about an employer HAVING to pay his employees for time? I’m really struggling here. What should I do?

people not comeing into work on time?

Do any of you work with a lot of Kenyans at job sthat you have to clock in and clock out everyday (not salary)? Do they come to work on time, or do they tend to be two hours late a lot? Where I work some Kenyans come to work on time, others come in very late. I read in my anthropology book that Kenyans worry about getting the job done then when they get there. I don’t think realize that when you work in retail its about the hours you work not the actual task you are having to complete. One girl that was Kenyan that use to work with me, she use to come on time for a long time, then she must have felt at home, or she thought people felt sorry for her and she wouldn’t get in trouble fo it. She would come in like 2 hours late alot, and the boss never did anything about. She would always make up some lame excuse She is finally gone. Her cousin was the same way. If you are or were a boss whether it is for an employee that is salary pay or not. How many x could someone be L8 n get way with it

do I have any recourse?employer withholding pay?

Boss/Owner is saying that I didn’t ‘work’ for a period of 2.5 hours the first day I started my job. other employee told boss this, & no one else except employee saying this is witness that I actually was working. Boss is saying other employee told her that I chose to ’study’ work related procedures ‘rather than complete tasks the other employee had assigned me to do’. Employee did not assign tasks to me;I was ’shadowing’ her (1st day)and repeatedly asked her to let me know what she needed me to do- when she told me, I did what she asked. In addition, at no time did the employee or boss tell me that I was doing something (i.e. studying, as is claimed, instead of working) that I should not have been doing.I was only told this after I inquired why my paycheck was less than hours I had punched on time clock. I punch a time clock and am paid hourly. can an employer arbitrarily decide that I wasn’t working and not pay me for those 2.5 disputed hours even though I had punched in? Is
this legal? I already asked state labor board and they would not answer the question directly (told me I could file complaint)….however, before I consider filing a complaint, I would just like to know if it is legal to pay someone less than the hours they punched in on a time clock?
